Canon help provide relief for 400 flooded households in central Vietnam

Hanoi, November 3, 2013 – Canon has taken decisive action to offer support in the wake of the terrible storm that swept into central Vietnam last month. Convoys organized by the company arrived at two districts in Ha Tinh province, one of the worst hit areas, to hand out hundreds of relief items including clothing, rice, domestic utensils and hard currency. The total worth of the relief amounted to around VND300million.

Ha Tinh province was hit badly by last month's extreme weather, suffering damage totaling around VND112 billion. On witnessing the terrible events, the staff and management of Canon Vietnam, Canon Marketing Vietnam along with distributor Le Bao Minh, coordinated employees to contribute to relief efforts and show solidarity with the people of Ha Tinh.

During their two day trip to the province, the Canon volunteers visited around 400 households in two communes: Duc Linh and Duc Bong.

Taniguchi Keisuke, General Manager of HR – GA division, Canon Vietnam Co., Ltd., said: “It was with great personal sadness that I witnessed the damage wreaked by the recent storm. There's a deep tradition of philanthropy in Vietnam while Canon's „kyosei' philosophy is based on coming together for the common good. Therefore, it was natural for us to offer support for storm victims. While the gifts can never compensate for the losses suffered, at least they represent a gesture of kind heartedness that can only help morale in the central region.”

Canon's most recent efforts are not the only time it has offered support in Ha Tinh province. In 2010, after two consecutive major hurricanes, Canon mobilized VND330 million to alleviate damage to households in Huong Khe and Vu Quang districts.

Mr. Le Van Ngo, Deputy Chairman of Duc Bong People Committee, Vu Quang District, Ha Tinh said: “The recent storm has flooded more than 300 households, separating 8 communes, causing a lot of difficulties to the local inhabitants. The roads were isolated and children could not go to school. The loss and damage are of great deal. In such a situation, the in-time support and contribution from companies like Canon would help people here quickly recover from the consequences of the storm and gradually return to their normal lives”.

Nguyen Bac Ha, one of 20 volunteers who joined the trip to Ha Tinh expressed: “Only when I came here myself did I understand the level of damage that the storm has caused to people living in Ha Tinh. Although our contribution today just plays a small part in the national joint effort to relieve the burden for the people here, we hope that what we brought to Duc Bong and Duc Linh will provide them not only technical support but also the necessary encouragement to move on“.

During the 2-day trip in Duc Bong and Duc Linh communes, Vu Quang district, Canon Marketing Vietnam, Canon Vietnam and Le Bao Minh also paid a visit to some individuals who were severely suffered from the typhoon, including household of Tran Thi Con, 85, household of Pham Thi Cuc 82 and her husband Nguyen Duc Tri 92, and household of Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, all living in Duc Bong and Duc Linh communes together with other households. On this occasion, Canon also delivered the gifts and cash to these heavily affected households, totaled 1.5 million VND each gift set.

As well as flood relief, Canon's corporate social responsible activities include the Canon - For Future Generations program -- an ongoing initiative to award scholarships and supplies to children in 48 disadvantaged schools across Vietnam. Another socially responsible program is Canon - For a Green Vietnam which focuses on environmental protection. In the future, Canon is committed to continue to coordinate with businesses, organizations and associations to undertake meaningful social programs.

Agreement signing ceremony of project “Canon friendship school chain” 2012 and the program “Canon – Delighting you to go to school”

Hanoi – 16 June 2012, Canon Vietnam signed a construction agreement of "Canon friendship school chain 2012” with 4 districts - Chiem Hoa (Tuyen Quang), Lac Son (Hoa Binh), Tan Ky (Nghe An), Huong Khe (Ha Tinh) and the program "Canon – Delighting you to go to school" with Bac Giang Communist Youth Union. The ceremony was attended by Mr. Katsuyoshi Soma - General Director of Canon Vietnam, Mr. Michio Motohashi - Deputy General Director of Canon Vietnam, as well as representatives of People’s Committee and Departments of Education and Training of the four provinces and representatives of Bac Giang’s Communist Youth Union.

The project "Canon friendship school chain" has been implemented since 2007 with an aim to provide children - the country’s next generation with better learning and living conditions. In recent years, Canon has collaborated with many projects of the government and other organizations and made considerable contributions in eliminating temporary classrooms made of bamboo and replacing them with more spacious, permanent and standard classrooms.

To maintain that success, in 2012, the company continued to support four kindergartens and primary schools of Chiem Hoa (Tuyen Quang), Lac Son (Hoa Binh), Tan Ky (Nghe An), Huong Khe (Ha Tinh). Most of these local schools are still in downgraded conditions, with overcrowded classrooms and lack of toys and necessary equipment. Furthermore, at kindergarten in Huong Thuy commune (Huong Khe, Ha Tinh), pupils are faced with danger everyday when getting to class by boat. With classrooms under the "Canon friendship school chain", now parents are assured that their children can play and study in new spacious and beautiful classes; enjoy delicious meals and take full nap at school every day. When these classrooms are handed over at the beginning of 2012-2013 school year, Canon Vietnam will provide these schools with more teaching and learning equipment such as computers, furniture, toys, Canon bookcases and tools, etc.

Within the framework of the project "Canon friendship school chain", this year Canon Vietnam started the pilot program "Canon – Accompanying children to school", in cooperation with Bac Giang Communist Youth Union to provide pupils coming from underprivileged families and living far from school with 100 bicycles to get to class safely and conveniently.

At the ceremony, Mr. Katsuyoshi Soma - General Director shared his sincere thoughts: "Children are always at the center of the universe and the future of every nation. Only when do they have good condition in daily life and studying to develop they-themselves, then the society development can be reached. Being aware of this, our company always put social activities which are children-oriented in the top priority. The project "Canon friendship school chain” is one of our efforts to support the pupils in particular and contribute to the whole Vietnamese society in general. "

Representative of Canon Vietnam – Ms. Dao Thi Thu Huyen makes speech & sincerely thanks Ben En National Park & all related agencies for supporting Canon Vietnam in sponsoring & implementing “For a green Vietnam” project. “I hope that 200 students, volunteer members here and also Vietnamese young people will realize deeply about environmental protection. According to some statistics, one person in a year will release about 8,000 tons of CO2 to the environment, and each tree in a year will exchange about 1,000 tons of CO2 into good air. So, each person in a year should plan 8 green trees to transfer all CO2. If we do that, we can ensure a clean living environment as well as create a green planet – the most valuable property which the current generation reserves for the following ones".

Also in this month, on 26th March, Canon Vietnam will continue co-operating with Luc Ngan district People's Committee, Managing Board of Cam Son protective forest, teacher & pupils of Luc Ngan 4 high school, to organize “For a green Vietnam” planting forest ceremony on a new 20ha protective forest after signing ceremony in December, 2010. With the guideline towards a green-clean-beautiful environment with sustainable development, in recent years, Canon has contributed significantly with social activities, keep the environment fresher and raise people's awareness about protecting environment together. Canon's planting forest project is one of such projects and has proved its usefulness. Born in 2010, the planting forest project "For a Vietnam Green" has developed and planted 50 ha of protective forest so far. In the next time, this project will continue to expand more, bring green to spread around the country of Vietnam.
